Dirty Socks Syndrome (DSS) was the name given to a foul odor that is emitted by an air-conditioning system. It seems to be indigenous to heat pump systems and is most active during the changing of the seasons. During this time the heat pump cycles or reverses several times within a short period. The foul odor is emitted when the blower engages. Since the actual cause for this syndrome is still hotly debated among engineers, an official "fix" by the industry has never been adopted. However, TechniCoated coils (evap coil) seem to solve the problem. It is believed that because of the sheeting action of the final coat used in the TechniCoat 10-2™ process that the moisture does not have a place on the coil itself to collect, therefore providing no area of growth for the bacteria or microbe suspected of causing the dirty socks smell.

If you live in an area of high contaminants and/or near the ocean or sea, to protect outside coil(s) from the corrosive action of the salt-air, you should use TechniCoat 10-2™. Also, many find TechniCoat 10-2™ to solve the Dirty Socks Syndrome (DSS) found effecting the inside coil(s).

To get a Technicoated Coil you must ask your dealer for this factory option. He must request that the coating be TechniCoat 10-2™. Therefore, you must be the educated consumer. Whether you need protection for your outside coil or you need the advantage of a coated inside coil, you will have to ask for it. Yes, it does cost a bit more, but worth it to not have to replace an outside coil every 2 or 3 years (in coastal application). Plus, by using TechniCoat 10-2™ you are having a great impact on the prevention of damage to the ozone by preventing the loss of Freon from an unprotected coil.

TechniCoat 10-2™ is a factory applied coating meeting the highest standard of the anti-corrosion industry. While many would have you believe that just spraying on something will solve your corrosion problems, that just simply is not the case. Premature system failure can result from improperly applied coatings or coatings not designed for HVAC equipment.
